Wimbledon and District Finals – Day 1

Saturday was the first day of the District Finals’ Weekend. After a change in the schedule things got underway with the Men’s Singles which saw Neil play Belmont. Drawing well from the start Neil led 11 – 3 after 6 ends, going on to take the win 21 – 9. The second session saw the 2-bowl Mixed Triples with Jackie, Dave and Neil taking on a Streatham Park/Belmont Triple. The game started with both teams picking up three singles and a two in the first 8 ends, leaving the scores tied at 5 – 5. Unfortunately for WPBC that was as close as things got as their opposition went up a few gears picking up a 3 and three 5s in the next four ends, going on to win 25 – 5. The final session of the day featured the Mixed Fours with Anne, Vera, Martin (sub for Pete) and Neil playing Heathfield. Another strong start saw Wimbledon Park lead 9 – 1 after 6 ends, before Heathfield settled to the task at hand and levelled the score at 10 – 10 after 11 ends. Over the next few ends whatever one team did was matched the next end by the other team and the scores remained level at 15 – 15 after 16 ends. Heathfield took a single on the 17th end to go in to the final end one up. Good drawing from Anne and Vera gave WPBC a lead of three which was turned around by the Heathfield number 3 who drew the shot, Martin then moved the jack to restore the lead of two to WPBC. The Heathfield skip then drew second bowl and with Neil’s final bowl just sitting down in the count, a real team effort came to an end with Wimbledon Park the champions winning 17 – 16. Congratulations to all of today’s finalists, to District President Richard F for taking charge of the day and to all 12 of our supporters.
