The First Trophy of 2019 or The Last One of 2018?

6.5.19 – Bank Holiday Monday got off to a great start as Streatham Park hosted the postponed 2018 Wimbledon and District Top 10 Final between Wimbledon Park and Belmont. Could we break the Runners-Up curse? Having been Runners-Up in this competition in 2012, 2013 and 2014 and finished as Runners-Up in 5 District Finals in 2018, there was much to play for!

First to finish was the Singles where Neil managed to win 21 – 12. A strong performance from Sabrina and Martin in the Pairs saw them lead 22 – 7 after 17 ends before Belmont narrowed the gap over the final four ends; Wimbledon Park winning 22 – 16. In the Triples, George, Vernon and Pete found the early ends tough going and trailed 4 – 10 after 7 ends. Winning the next nine ends the game was transformed with Wimbledon Park leading 18 – 10 with two ends to play. The last two ends went to Belmont, but WPBC again emerged as the winners 18 – 15. The Fours was a close tussle all the way through with Anne, Claire, Richard and Ossie leading 17 – 14 after 15 ends. The run in went to Belmont however who shook hands after 20 ends with the score at 17 – 25.

Match result  – a win for Wimbledon Park who are the belated 2018 Wimbledon and District Top 10 Champions, winning by 78 shots to 68. The Runners-Up curse is broken! We can look forward to 2019 with fresh enthusiasm.

A huge thank you to all players who got us to the final with our earlier wins against Streatham Park and Heathfield, to our finalists who played so well on the day and to Ange for her support at the final. Now all we have to do, is do it again in 2019!
