What a Close Match in the League

August 28th – this afternoon we welcomed Mitcham, the league leaders, to Wimbledon Park for our latest league fixture. Hector, Betty, Pete and Martin found themselves 0 – 6 after 3 ends, but turned this around to lead 14 – 6 after 8 ends. At 13 ends the score stood at 17 – 12 before Mitcham rallied to take the lead 18 – 17 at 18 ends. A final flourish saw WPBC win 21 – 18. Second rink to finish, Vernon, Angela, Jonathan and Barry found the going tough early on and trailed 3 – 11 after 10 ends. 8 ends later and a solid second half had transformed the game so that WPBC were ahead 17 – 14. The final twist saw Mitcham take the last 3 ends to win 21 – 17. Cherry, Alison, Ossie and Neil had a close game throughout, with the scores level at 9 – 9 after 11 ends and 10 – 10 two ends later. After 20 ends the score was 19 – 14, meaning that WPBC needed to limit Mitcham to less than 4 shots to prevent them tying the match. Careful bowling on the final end saw Mitcham pick up 3 shots, leaving WPBC with a 19 – 17 win. Match result 8 – 2 (57 shots to 56).
