What a Great Day at the Wimbledon and District Finals

8.9.19 – Over at Streatham Park today we had finalists in an amazing 6 Wimbledon and District Finals. In the first session, after 9 ends, Barry and Neil led Raynes Park 17 – 3 in the Men’s Pairs, before dropping a count of 5. Continuing to draw well, hands were shaken after 18 ends giving WPBC a 23 – 13 win. Also in the first session Claire, George, Sabrina and Martin played Wandilea in the Mixed Fours. At 5 – 15 after 14 ends, Wimbledon Park surmounted a great comeback which took them to 12 – 16 with one end to play, unfortunately, despite a valiant attempt, WPBC could only manage to take 2 shots on the last end to narrowly lose 14 – 16.

The second session saw the Ladies’ and Men’s Singles with Sabrina playing Heathfield and Neil playing Wandilea. Sabrina was 5 – 12 down before drawing back to level the match at 17 – 17, but unfortunately a trail on the jack on the final end gave Heathfield the match 21 – 17. The score in Neil’s match turned out to be a little more one sided, although it didn’t reflect the closeness of the match, Neil managing to win 21 – 11.

The third session featured the Men’s Triples, with Barry, Richard and Neil taking on Colliers Wood. Starting well Wimbledon Park led 6 – 2 after 7 ends but dropping two counts of 3 gave Colliers Wood the lead. Losing a further 4 consecutive ends left the score at 10 – 16 with 2 ends remaining; picking up a single and a count of 5 on the last end tied the match, taking it to an extra end. With Richard drawing a perfect bowl it was down to the Colliers Wood skip to change the head and he came within a couple of inches of doing it, however Wimbledon Park hung on to win an exciting match 17 – 16.

The fourth session should have seen Neil play Heathfield in the Mixed Singles, however due to the late finishing of the Triples this was postponed until Tuesday evening.

Congratulations to all of our finalists and thank you to Ange, Pete and Rosalind for adding their support at the finals.
