Club Finals – Second Day Update and 4th District Finalist

The second day of the club finals’ weekend started with the sun shining and another positive group of players, markers and supporters assembled at the green. The first session saw Gay beat Betty 6 – 8, 7 – 10 in the Ladies’ Sets competition, The Joan White Memorial Cup, and Anne B/Neil beat Sabrina/Luke 25 – 19 in the Handicap Pairs. The final session saw Neil beat Barry 77 – 63 in the Four Wood Points, whilst the three championships went to Derek, in the Junior, who beat Anne B 21 – 17, Sabrina in the Ladies’, who beat Gay 21 – 14 and Martin in the Men’s who beat Luke 21 – 17. The Open Singles between Pete and Luke will be played tomorrow at 11am. Thanks to everyone who made today another successful one, players, caterers, markers – Ann H, Betty, Jonathan and Pete, umpires – Jonathan and Martin and our supporters. In total we had 25 club members attending the finals’ weekend, many of whom stayed on after the finals had finished to support our four bowlers in the semi-final of the District Men’s Pairs…

…and what a semi-final it was, as Luke and Jonathan took on Pete and Martin for a place in next Sunday’s final. The game began with both pairs bowling at a very high level, the first seven ends being won with singles, to leave Pete/Martin 5 – 2 ahead. Three ends later the lead had extended to 8 – 4, before Luke and Jonathan rallied to win the next four ends and lead 14 – 8. Not to be outdone, Pete and Martin came back with some high quality drawing, levelling the score at 14 – 14 with three ends left to play. A two and a three to Luke and Jonathan had Pete and Martin needing five shots to level the match and force an extra end. Despite another great end of bowling, picking up three shots was not quite enough and it was Luke and Jonathan who take Wimbledon Park’s place in the final following their 19 – 17 victory.
